- How to Prevent Ingrown Hairs
- One of the biggest draws of Brazilian waxing is the instant smoothness you get right after your appointment. It’s no surprise that many clients say they’ve noticed their hair becoming finer and sparser over time with regular waxing.
However, a common concern that some people encounter is ingrown hairs.
Ingrown hairs occur when the hair grows back into the skin rather than out through the surface. While this can happen with any hair removal method - whether it’s waxing, laser treatment, or IPL - it can be frustrating and sometimes uncomfortable.
In more severe cases, ingrown hairs can lead to inflammation or even folliculitis. When pores remain open after hair removal, dirt can become trapped, and ingrown hairs can get stuck beneath hardened oil and skin (also known as keratin plugs or blocked pores). Although tweezing the hair out is often possible, too much picking or irritation can put stress on your skin.
So, how can you prevent or improve ingrown hairs?
Gentle exfoliation is key! We recommend massaging the skin with a scrub 1-3 times a week. For the intimate area (including the bikini line and around the buttocks), it’s best to use a facial-grade or sugar-based scrub, as these are gentle and suitable for sensitive skin.
If you’ve been sticking with Brazilian waxing and already exfoliate regularly but still struggle with ingrown hairs, it might be time to try sugaring.
Sugaring is made from natural sugar and has moisturising and antibacterial properties. It’s also gentler on the skin compared to traditional wax, which can help reduce the occurrence of ingrown hairs. Many of our clients who’ve switched to sugaring report fewer ingrown hairs and are thrilled with the results.
