The Risks of Straightening Bleached Hair
Applying chemical straightening to bleached hair is extremely risky. Bleaching removes melanin with strong alkalis and peroxide, but it also strips proteins and lipids, leaving the cuticle lifted and the hair fragile.
Straightening, on the other hand, breaks disulfide bonds, reshapes the hair with heat, and reforms bonds through oxidation. On already weakened bleached hair, these bonds may fail to reset, leading to breakage, frizz, or a rubbery texture known as elastic breakage.
The more bleaching or overlapping damage, the harder it is to control chemical penetration, increasing the chance of uneven results or even hair loss in fragile spots.
While acidic straightening or intensive care may reduce risks, no method can guarantee safety. Safer alternatives include keratin treatments, deep conditioning, or styling approaches. A detailed consultation with an experienced stylist is essential before attempting straightening on bleached hair.
