- How long Japanese hair straightening last?

The longevity of a Japanese hair straightening treatment usually lasts three to six months, depending on hair condition and aftercare. The process chemically breaks down the hair’s disulfide bonds and reshapes them with heat, creating a permanent straight structure in the treated section. That part remains straight until it grows out or is cut.
However, as new hair grows, natural curls or waves appear at the roots, creating contrast with the straightened parts. This makes it seem like the straightening effect has faded. People with faster hair growth or strong natural curls may notice this after about three months.
Durability also depends on hair health and product type. Damaged or fine hair may not retain the shape as long, while healthy hair treated under optimal pH conditions can maintain smoothness longer.
To prolong results, proper home care is essential. Use mild, amino-acid-based shampoos and protein-rich treatments to support the inner structure. Avoid overusing heat tools and don’t sleep with wet hair, as these habits can weaken the straightened bonds.
With correct maintenance and touch-ups every six months, your hair can stay sleek, soft, and naturally straight all year long.
