What Is a Cystine Bond?
A cystine bond, also known as a disulfide bond, is a chemical connection that plays a crucial role in determining the strength, shape, and resilience of hair. It forms when two cysteine amino acids―found within the keratin proteins that make up about 90% of hair―link together through their sulfur atoms. This sulfur-sulfur bridge creates a strong, stable bond that gives hair its structure and elasticity.
In healthy hair, these cystine bonds are evenly distributed, helping maintain smoothness and natural shine. However, when hair is exposed to strong chemicals, heat, or UV light, these bonds can break, leading to frizz, dryness, and loss of strength. Treatments such as hair straightening or perming temporarily break and then re-form these bonds to change the hair’s texture.
In professional hair services like Japanese straightening or keratin treatments, controlling cystine bonds is the key. A stylist carefully adjusts the balance between breaking and rebuilding these bonds to achieve a desired, long-lasting result while minimizing damage.
