- Types of Curly Hair and Their Characteristics
Curly hair comes in many forms, each with unique structure and behavior. From a professional stylist’s point of view, understanding curl types helps in choosing the right treatment and care. In general, curly hair can be classified into wavy, coiled, kinky, and beaded types.
Wavy hair forms gentle S-shaped curves and tends to expand or frizz easily in humid weather. It usually feels soft but can lose definition without proper moisture. Using lightweight oils and hydrating treatments helps control volume while keeping it smooth.
Coiled hair grows in spiral shapes. It’s typically dry and coarse because natural oils from the scalp can’t travel easily along the twisted strands. Deep conditioning and gentle detangling are key to preventing breakage and maintaining elasticity.
Kinky hair has very tight curls or irregular bends. This is caused by uneven cystine bond distribution inside the hair, which makes it more fragile. It needs delicate handling, low heat, and careful chemical processes to maintain its structure.
Beaded hair appears with alternating thick and thin sections, making it prone to snapping. Mild cleansers and protein-based care can help strengthen these weak points.
Knowing your curl type allows for more precise styling and treatment choices. With the right salon techniques and daily care, even the most unruly curls can become healthy, shiny, and manageable.
